Junior Cycle

Carrigallen Vocational School currently offers the following subjects at Junior Cycle level:
  • English
  • Gaeilge
  • Maths
  • French (Modern Foreign Language)
  • History
  • Geography
  • Science
  • Business Studies
  • Music
  • Visual Art
  • Materials Technology (Wood)
  • Metalwork
  • Technical Graphics
  • Religious Studies (Non-Exam subject)

Students do a TASTER MENU for 1st Year, allowing them an opportunity to experience all subjects. This allows them to make more informed choices when it comes to narrowing down their subjects in 2nd Year.

For the new Junior Cycle, the subjects English, Gaeilge and Maths are mandatory. In 2019, the Minister for Education announced that History would also become mandatory going forward, awarding the subject ‘special status’. After that, students are invited to choose their subjects on a sliding scale of interest. From that, subject blocks are created so that the greatest number of students will be able to study their preferred subjects.

Wellbeing

Student Wellbeing is now catered for under the new Junior Cycle. As well as the mandatory study of CSPE, SPHE and PE, students will have two classes a week that will be timetabled for units of study and / or activities designed to promote wellbeing.

The following subjects are offered under the compulsory umbrella of Wellbeing:

  • CSPE
  • SPHE
  • Physical Education
